The size of very large earthquakes might be easier to predict than smaller quakes. A Scripps-led team found that a new model did a good job explaining the amount of slip due to the 2023 Turkey earthquakes. The model also predicts some quakes might have the potential to be bigger than thought.

William Kuperman, emeritus professor of oceanography and former Director of the Marine Physical Laboratory (MPL) at UC San Diego’s Scripps Institution of Oceanography, died June 30. He was 81. Kuperman was widely recognized for his contributions to the fields of underwater acoustics and acoustical oceanography.

Joris Gieskes, a marine chemist affiliated with Scripps Institution of Oceanography at UC San Diego for nearly six decades, died May 19, 2024 at his home in Del Mar, Calif. He was 90.
